Vintage Japanese reproduction after Kitagawa Utamaro (c. 1753–1806), one of the most celebrated artists of Edo-period ukiyo-e. The image depicts the courtesan Hinazuru of the Chōjiya, from Utamaro’s Competition of Beauties series, shown with an elaborate arrangement of hairpins and holding a folded cloth delicately at her mouth. The original composition dates to the late 18th century.
This example is a mid-20th-century reproduction, likely dating to the 1960s–1970s, and has been recently professionally framed with a wide cream mount and simple silver-toned frame. A particularly attractive decorative example of classic Japanese bijin-ga portraiture.
Size: 38 x 50cm framed
