A striking freestanding collection of more than 60 plaster intaglio and cameo casts, depicting classical portraits, mythological scenes, figures, chariots and architectural monuments. The tradition comes directly from the European Grand Tour, when plaster impressions of ancient engraved gems, medals and sculpture were collected in Italy as souvenirs of classical antiquity. Comparable historic collections were often mounted in albums or framed displays.
Here the casts have been individually arranged against beautifully marbled paper and presented behind glass in a substantial dark wood frame with a gilt inner slip, brass carrying handle and sculptural brass easel feet. The combination makes this much more of a decorative object or cabinet-of-curiosities piece than a conventional framed picture. Based on the construction and presentation, I would conservatively describe the complete assemblage as mid-20th century, Grand Tour style, rather than claiming the casts themselves are 19th century without further provenance. The frame shows the light wear and character expected with age, while the intaglios remain impressively detailed.
