Vintage 1960s–70s Kitagawa Utamaro “Geigi” Reproduction Print – Recently Framed – 38 x 50cm

Vintage mid-century reproduction after Kitagawa Utamaro (c. 1753–1806), based on the original “Geigi” from the series Five Shades of Ink in the Northern Quarter (Hokkoku Goshiki-zumi), first published around 1794–1795. The series consisted of five portraits representing different women of Edo’s Yoshiwara pleasure district; this image depicts a geigi, or geisha, shown elegantly dressed with an elaborate coiffure and raised hand. 

This example is a vintage reproduction dating approximately to the 1960s–1970s and has been recently professionally framed with a wide cream mount and clean silver-toned frame. The strong black, purple, red and muted silver-grey palette makes it especially striking as a decorative piece while retaining the distinctive character of Utamaro’s late-18th-century original.
