Description

A scarce 1997 first edition of The Voice of the ‘Oud’: A Story of Kuwait by Jehan S. Rajab, published in Kuwait by The Kuwait Bookshops Co. Ltd. This substantial illustrated hardcover presents Kuwait’s history and traditional life through chapters on the Battle of Jahra, Bedouin life, shipbuilding, pearl diving, historic architecture, clothing, weddings, the discovery of oil, Failaka Island, and the Iraqi invasion. The appendices include maps, the Al-Sabah family tree, a chronology of Kuwait history, glossary, bibliography, and index. Contemporary Kuwait sources also cite the work as published in 1997.

Approximately 29 years old. Large-format hardcover with original pictorial dust jacket and approximately 255 pages, extensively illustrated with historic photographs, including images of old Kuwait, Failaka, early buildings, and members of the ruling family. The book itself appears well preserved internally; the dust jacket shows noticeable age-related wear, including creasing, scratches, edge and corner wear, particularly to the rear, all clearly shown in the photographs. A particularly difficult Kuwait-history title to find.
