Rare 1959 H.R.P. Dickson – The Arab of the Desert – Preferred Third Impression with Original Dust Jacket & Folding Maps

A scarce 1959 third impression of H. R. P. Dickson’s The Arab of the Desert: A Glimpse into Badawin Life in Kuwait and Sau’di Arabia, published by George Allen & Unwin, London. One of the essential early works on Kuwait and Arabian life, Dickson draws on decades of firsthand experience to document Bedouin customs, tribal society, desert travel, hunting, animals, pearl diving, and everyday life. This 664-page edition is extensively illustrated with photographs, drawings, genealogical charts and large folding maps, including the striking motor-road map from Kuwait to Riyadh. Importantly, specialist bookseller Shapero describes the 1959 third impression as the “preferred edition”, because it includes additional maps and has the charts bound into the volume for easier use.

Approximately 67 years old. Original orange cloth hardcover with gilt spine lettering and the original illustrated dust jacket, now protected in a clear removable cover. The book itself presents well, with the folding maps and illustrations appearing particularly clean; the jacket has significant age-related edge wear, chipping, creasing and small losses, together with an old handwritten marking to the spine, all visible in the photographs.
