A striking pair of antique Indian wooden benches, likely dating to the late 19th to early 20th century. Each is individually hand-built with broad plank seats, turned front legs, pierced carved aprons and tall architectural backs finished with carved finials and decorative metal flower mounts. Traces of the earlier painted finish remain throughout, creating a beautifully weathered surface and strong sense of age.
The benches have lived a long working life and retain the irregularities expected of genuinely old, handmade furniture. There is extensive surface wear, fading and finish loss, age-related splitting and movement to the timber, old hardware and repairs, and small losses and variations between the two pieces. Both benches have received additional reinforcement to improve stability while retaining their original aged character. They remain intentionally unrestored in appearance. For regular interior seating, we recommend adding a seat cushion both for comfort and to help protect the original plank seats.
Dimensions:
Bench 1: approximately 110 × 56 × 97 cm
Bench 2: approximately 118 × 52 × 98 cm
