An important 1989 First Edition of Jehan S. Rajab’s Palestinian Costume, a beautifully illustrated study of traditional Palestinian dress, embroidery, textiles and jewellery. Published by Kegan Paul International, the book examines regional variations in costume among townspeople, villagers and Bedouin communities, documenting changing styles and techniques through historic photographs and richly illustrated examples.

This volume also carries particular significance in Kuwait because of Jehan Rajab and the remarkable cultural legacy of the Rajab family. Jehan and her husband, Tareq S. Rajab, founded the Tareq Rajab Museum in Kuwait in 1980, building a collection that now numbers more than 30,000 objects and includes important holdings of Islamic art, textiles, embroideries, costumes, jewellery and manuscripts. Their work helped preserve and share the material culture of the Islamic world for generations of visitors, researchers and students in Kuwait.

Jehan Rajab’s scholarship was closely connected to this lifelong engagement with traditional dress and material culture. Palestinian Costume remains an important visual record of Palestinian embroidery and clothing traditions, with extensive colour and black-and-white illustrations covering regions including Jerusalem, Bethlehem, Hebron, Galilee and the Bir Seb’a/Sinai area.

Condition: Very good vintage condition with light shelf and edge wear consistent with age. The illustrated green cover remains bright and attractive, with only minor marks and rubbing visible in the photographs. Interior pages appear clean and well preserved. Please see photographs for full condition.

I am offering this copy in particular appreciation of Jehan Rajab’s literary and scholarly work, and of the Rajab family’s lasting contribution to the preservation of art, history and cultural heritage in Kuwait.
