A striking Japanese ukiyo-e woodblock print depicting the sumo wrestler Tsurugisan Taniemon, identified by the Japanese dealer. The bold portrait is surrounded by flowering branches and a circular decorative border, with strong blue, yellow, black and natural tones. The textured paper, visible creasing and irregular edges give the work considerable character and presence. 

Age: Original design likely mid-19th century, circa 1840s–1850s; exact printing date of this impression unconfirmed.
