Dame Violet Dickson by Claudia Farkas Al Rashoud

Written by Claudia Farkas Al Rashoud, this illustrated biography tells the remarkable story of Dame Violet Dickson, affectionately known in Kuwait as Umm Saud. Arriving in Kuwait in 1929 with her husband, H.R.P. Dickson, Violet witnessed more than six decades of extraordinary change and became one of the country’s most beloved expatriate figures. Drawing on personal recollections, historical photographs and the memories of those who knew her, the book explores her life in old Kuwait, her relationship with the ruling family and local community, the Dicksons’ experiences throughout the region, and the transformation of Kuwait through the twentieth century. This is the updated second edition, published in 2007, and includes numerous historic photographs of Kuwait and the Dickson family.
