A striking antique incense burner by Vantine’s, made in France during the Art Deco era. The burner is designed in an Asian-inspired temple form with two sculptural elephant heads forming handles, an ornate pierced domed lid, floral and geometric decoration, and a raised four-legged base. The interior retains its separate metal incense cup.
The underside is impressed “Vantine’s” and “Made in France.” Vantine’s sold a range of French-made exotic revival incense burners during the 1920s, including Asian-inspired examples in cast metal. Comparable marked Vantine’s burners are generally dated to this period.
Estimated Date: c. 1920s
Origin: France
Maker/Retailer: Vantine’s
Material: Cast metal with bronze/brass-toned finish
Function: Incense burner / censer
Condition: Displays beautifully with an aged dark patina and expected surface wear. There are visible cracks to the lid, including cracking around the pierced top section and cracks along the lower rim/underside of the lid. These are important age-related condition issues but the lid remains present and the piece retains its strong decorative character. The interior incense cup is also present.
