A particularly unusual antique Japanese Imari/Arita porcelain plate, which I would date to approximately the late Meiji period, c. 1880–1910. Measuring 22 cm diameter, the scalloped plate is hand-painted in iron red, cobalt blue and an especially attractive turquoise-green enamel, with a central floral arrangement surrounded by alternating blossoms, birds and large stylized auspicious character panels. The reverse carries freely painted underglaze-blue motifs typical of Japanese decorative porcelain of this general period. Comparable Meiji Imari pieces are documented using similarly expanded palettes including turquoise and green enamels. Condition: good antique condition with expected minor enamel, glaze and rim wear consistent with age. The brass-tone spring plate hanger shown is included.
