A striking Japanese sumo ukiyo-e woodblock print by Gyokuha, identified by the Japanese dealer as Shintaro Toriya, Tokyo, 1903. The powerful full-length portrait of the sumo wrestler is set against a rich blue ground, with bold red and black detailing to his ceremonial apron. Dating to 1903, the work is approximately 123 years old and makes an especially strong decorative statement.

Presented in a substantial vintage/antique khatam kari custom frame with exceptionally intricate geometric marquetry. The frame is intentionally sold in distressed antique condition and shows considerable age-related character. Conservation has been carried out to the front to add stability to areas of the marquetry; we recommend retaining the original varnish rather than removing it, as it forms part of the frame's historic surface. As is typical with handmade and vintage khatam kari, small imperfections around the edges are normal and contribute to its authentic character.
