Antique Indian Gulf Trade Chest with Bone-Type Inlay & Brass Studs – c.1900

A substantial antique Indian hardwood storage chest dating to approximately c.1900–1920, made in the tradition of Indian trade and dowry chests that circulated widely throughout the Arabian Gulf. The chest features a richly aged dark wood surface, turned feet, brass stud decoration, and pale bone-type inlay arranged around the lid in simple circular motifs. Inside is a large open storage compartment with a smaller raised side section, a traditional feature often found in older Indian chests.

The chest retains a wonderful patina with visible marks, wear, surface variation, and evidence of old repairs consistent with its age and utilitarian history. Some of the hardware appears to have been replaced or resecured over time. These signs of use form an important part of the character of the piece and have been left intact rather than refinished.
