Antique c.1840 Engraved Portrait of Ottoman Sultan Abdülhamid I in Persian Silver-Plated Frame

A striking 19th-century engraved portrait of Ottoman Sultan Abdülhamid I, after H. Lalaisse and directed by Lemaître, with engraving by Monnin. A catalogued example of this same portrait dates the engraving to approximately 1840, making the print around 185 years old.

The engraving has been beautifully presented in an ornate silver-plated copper Persian frame, richly worked with floral and foliate decoration and an arched architectural opening around the portrait. The aged silvered surface and intricate hand-worked appearance give the frame tremendous character and make the piece especially appealing as a meeting of Ottoman and Persian decorative traditions.
