An important first-hand account of the 1990 Iraqi invasion and occupation of Kuwait, written by Jehan S. Rajab, co-founder of Kuwait’s Tareq Rajab Museum. Invasion Kuwait: An English Woman’s Tale records Rajab’s experiences during the occupation, from the invasion of August 1990 through months of fear, resistance and life under Iraqi control to Kuwait’s liberation in February 1991. Chapters cover Kuwaiti women demonstrating, looting and resistance, hiding and hostage-taking, house-to-house searches, fire bombing, liberation and freedom. Illustrated with photographs and maps, including a period map of Kuwait City and its suburbs.
The book has particular significance within Kuwait’s cultural history because of the Rajab family’s extraordinary contribution to preserving the country’s artistic and historical heritage. Rajab dedicates the volume to Sheikh Jaber Al Ahmad Al Sabah, Sheikh Saad Al Abdullah Al Salim Al Sabah, those who remained in Kuwait during the occupation, hostages and prisoners of war, and to the memory of Dame Violet Dickson. A personal note from The Carpet Guy Kuwait: I first read this book in 2018 and loved it. It remains one of the most immediate and memorable accounts of the occupation I have encountered, and I am offering this copy out of respect for Jehan Rajab’s literary work and the Rajab family’s lasting contribution to Kuwait.
