A compelling 1974 second impression of Geoffrey Moorhouse’s The Fearful Void, published by Hodder & Stoughton the same year as the first printing. Moorhouse recounts his extraordinary 1972–73 attempt to cross the Sahara alone from Mauritania toward the Nile, travelling largely by camel through some of the harshest desert terrain in the world; illness and exhaustion ultimately ended the journey at Tamanrasset after roughly 2,000 miles. More than a conventional travel book, it is an intensely personal account of isolation, fear and endurance, illustrated with colour and black-and-white photographs and maps showing both his intended and actual routes. The hardcover retains its original blue boards with gilt spine lettering and the striking photographic dust jacket. 288 pages. ISBN 0-340-16692-4. Age: approximately 52 years.
