A beautifully produced 1973 first American edition of Wilfrid Blunt’s The Golden Road to Samarkand, published in New York by The Viking Press as a Studio Book, complete with its original illustrated dust jacket. Blunt traces more than two thousand years of Central Asian history through the remarkable figures who travelled to or conquered the region, including Alexander the Great, Hsuan-tsang, Genghis Khan, Marco Polo, Ibn Battuta, Tamerlane, Babur, Anthony Jenkinson and Aurel Stein, concluding with Samarkand in the modern era. The substantial 280-page large-format volume is especially desirable for its rich visual material, with historical maps, Persian and Central Asian manuscript illustrations, paintings, photographs and numerous full-page colour plates. Published in 1973, this copy is approximately 53 years old and retains the attractive original pictorial jacket and red cloth binding with gilt spine lettering. Condition:very good vintage condition overall; the book itself is clean and well preserved, with expected light age-related wear and some rubbing, small edge knocks and minor wear to the original dust jacket as photographed.
