A handsome 1966 First Edition of Freya Stark’s Rome on the Euphrates: The Story of a Frontier, published in London by John Murray. In this substantial work, Stark traces centuries of interaction between Rome and the civilizations beyond its eastern frontier, following the Euphrates through the ancient worlds of Anatolia, Syria and Mesopotamia. Part history and part travel narrative, the book explores Roman expansion, Parthia, trade routes connecting East and West, Palmyra, Byzantium and the long struggle for control of one of the ancient world’s most important frontiers.
For collectors of Arabian and Middle Eastern travel literature, the author is particularly significant. Freya Stark was one of the major British travel writers associated with the Middle East, and this volume makes an excellent companion to her earlier Baghdad Sketches—especially for a collection that also includes Stark’s important first-hand writings and photographs of pre-oil Kuwait and Failaka. This edition is illustrated with numerous photographic plates and retains the impressive large folding map showing the Tigris and Euphrates region and the wider network of historic routes extending toward Central Asia and the Silk Road.
Condition: Good vintage condition. Original cloth binding remains solid and attractive, with noticeable age-related fading to the spine and upper portions of the boards, together with scattered spotting and light shelf wear. Gilt title to the front remains clear. No dust jacket. Interior appears clean and well preserved, and the important large folding map is present and displays very well. Please see photographs for full condition.
