A scarce 1960 First Edition of Zahra Freeth’s Run Softly, Demerara, published by George Allen & Unwin and retaining its original illustrated dust jacket. The book records Freeth’s experiences living in British Guiana, now Guyana, particularly around the Demerara River and the bauxite community of Mackenzie, offering an illustrated mid-20th-century portrait of the country, its communities and a rapidly changing society.
Although the subject of this volume is not Kuwait, Zahra Freeth occupies an important place in Kuwait’s modern historical record. She was the daughter of H. R. P. Dickson and Violet Dickson, grew up closely connected with Kuwait, and later wrote extensively about the country herself. The original rear dust jacket of this copy even advertises her celebrated earlier book Kuwait Was My Home, making this an especially appealing companion volume for collectors of the Dickson family, Kuwaitiana and Arabian Gulf history.
Condition: Good vintage condition. The original green illustrated dust jacket remains present and attractive, with age-related rubbing, small edge chips, creasing and wear around the corners and spine ends. Interior illustrated pages appear well preserved and clean. Please see photographs for full condition.
This copy is being offered not because its subject is specifically Kuwaiti, but because Zahra Freeth and the wider Dickson family form an important part of the written historical legacy of Kuwait. It makes an excellent companion piece to Freeth’s Kuwait books and to the works of H. R. P. and Violet Dickson.
