1939 Baghdad Sketches by Freya Stark – Cheap Edition with Original Dust Jacket

Published by John Murray in 1939, this early “Cheap Edition” of Freya Stark’s Baghdad Sketches followed the 1937 British edition and retains its striking original photographic dust jacket, still bearing the 7/6 net price. The book is illustrated throughout with Stark’s photographs and includes her travels to Kuwait, with period photographs and observations from the city and Gulf coast. The illustrated map also prominently marks Kuwait. The 1939 edition is considerably less valuable than the scarce 1937 first British edition, but surviving copies with their original jackets are much harder to find than the commonly available jacketless examples.

The cloth-bound book remains in good vintage condition. The original dust jacket is heavily worn, with chipping, losses, tears and old tape repairs, but importantly remains substantially intact. A wonderfully atmospheric pre-war account of Iraq and the Gulf by one of the most celebrated travel writers of the 20th century.
