An important 1937 First British Edition of Freya Stark’s Baghdad Sketches, published in London by John Murray. Although principally associated with Iraq and Stark’s travels across the region, this expanded edition contains a remarkable first-hand record of Kuwait in 1937, immediately before the transformations of the oil era. Dedicated sections include “The Kuwait Journey,” “Kuwait 1937,” and “Failichah” (Failaka Island), recording Stark’s impressions of Kuwait City, its people, customs, harbour and surrounding Gulf landscape. The volume is extensively illustrated with Stark’s own period photographs, including historic views of old Kuwait and Failaka.
Of particular interest to collectors of Kuwaitiana is Stark’s description of pre-oil Kuwait and Failaka as she personally encountered them nearly ninety years ago.
Condition: Good antique condition. Original green cloth binding with attractive gilt lettering, showing age-related fading, spotting and surface marks, particularly to the spine and boards, together with light bumping and wear to the extremities. Some foxing and age toning to the endpapers. No dust jacket. The interior remains generally well preserved with the important photographic plates and Kuwait material present. Please see photographs for full condition.
